The CD with the cover I drew recently has just gone on sale.

The image is a montage of elements taken from lyrics on the LP. There is a slight Noir twist to my usual style here to fit what the band wanted a little better.
Check it all out over at www.uglyography.com
There are posters available on their store with the drawing on too.
Undercover New Machine is a collection of 13 compositions from Uglyography frontman and bassist Matt Thomas (formerly of The Outer Loop and Lord Bowler). The album blends early punk rock energy and ideas (Descendents, Minutemen) with quirky catchy melodies (a la They Might Be Giants, Ween). The diverse musical blend mixed with rock-opera style lyrics define the essense of the Quirkadelic genre that Uglyography creates.

Last month we made the trip to Bristol to visit the “Art from the New World” show at the Bristol City art gallery (The same place that held the big Banksy show not long ago..)

It was well worth the trip.
Curated by the Corey Helford gallery it collects together a whole gaggle of cutting edge American (and English living in America) artists together and shows there work to the general public in a big show away from the usual “scene” type venues. This is a great entry level show for anyone who hasnt ever heard of the phrases “Low Brow” or “Pop Surrealism”.
As you can see on the flier above there is a top line-up of artists with some amazing pieces many new for this show.
You are greeted in the main hall before entering the show gallery by a huge inflateable Buff Monster Ice cream. Buff has also painted a large mural on the walls in three alcoves in the same room.

To the left of the ice cream was a huge Todd Schorr piece.

Inside, the show hall is a large open space with a lot of room to breath and weave between the many people wandering around the show. This wasnt an opening or anything special just a regular week day and it was still very busy.
ok so the place looks empty in the photos but I was waiting for people to move before snapping.

And here are a load of closeups of some of the pieces.
Not really a dud in the show and a great variety of styles too.
This was the first time I had seen actual works from a lot of these artists. Its odd to have known and followed some artists for years and yet never had the chance to actually see an original work before. One of the problems of being in the UK with practically all the shows being in the USA.

Camilla Rose Garcia and below Joshua Petker

Outside the show gallery it’s easy to miss Colin Christian’s piece. Although it’s huge at around four feet tall, it’s hung in the room behind the one with the icecream. Take a moment to wander in there and check it out. Its a cracker.

The show runs till the 22nd of August 10am to 5pm daily.
Do go and check it out if you can.
Also it’s worth noting most of the pieces are available to be purchased, though many had sold when I visited.

On July the 1st the Art Hustle vintage style bubblegum card packs go on sale.
I was honoured to be asked to be a part of series one of this collectors card set made up of artists from around the world.
The Art Hustle is a boutique set of artist and art-based trading cards exhibiting an international group of 75 artists working in street art, toy art, kaiju, sketch, illustration, painting, aerosol art, poster art, tattoo art, digital art, collage, sculpture, photography and more. Inspired by trading cards produced from the 1960’s through the 80’s, the set offers up some vintage-inspired flavour including chipboard card stock and the much-loved wax paper wrapper. Cards also come with interesting facts on the backs that you don’t want to miss.
I have done a bunch of ink drawings on the cards to be randomly inserted in the packs. All the artists in the series have also done original works for insertion so you could get a piece of original art with your bubblegum stick.
Here are some of mine.

I hope it makes the cards smell the way they did when I was a kid.. (It was Hammer Horror cards for me back then..)

Last weekend myself and my little family went on a trip down to Canterbury to spend a splendid few days with Julien and Laura, some friends of ours.
Julien is one of those immensely talented artists who simply not enough people know about!
His technical ability with oil paint is outrageous and his choice of subject matter is diverse and surreal.
He has shown all over the UK but not managed to get a foothold in the USA for some reason.
I suggest some of you gallery owners out there invite him into a few of your joint shows soon and see the pieces fly off the walls.
I took a few snaps of his latest series of works whilst I was there.
I do apologise for the low quality of the photos and the iffy reflections. I am sure poor Julien will be shaking his head in disgust at the terrible repros.. (Though to be honest I don’t think any photo can really capture the vibrancy and translucent element of his work.)
Sorry I am not sure what this series is called. But they all have elements of classic hotrod cars, Atomic blasts and Outer Limits characters…

And here are a couple of paintings from last year. His Mechanamorphism series.

And a detail from that last one..

Julien has a couple of pieces in the upcoming show “Society of Art of Imagination” at La Galleria, Pall Mall, 30 Royal Opera Arcade, London SW1,
from the 19th-24th April. (Nearest tube – Charring Cross/Piccadilly Circus.)
You can see more of his amazing work (and of course buy stuff direct from him) on his website : Baroque Designs
